[Jesus told a story about a person who was using his life to acquire wealth, so that eh could enjoy his life later. Then a voice said,] “You fool! This very night you will have to give up your life.”
In the 1960s all pro star Jerry Kramer wrote a best-seller called Instant Replay. “Whets my purpose here on earth besides playing the silly game I play every Sunday?”
In 1980s Kramer wrote a sequel called Distant Play. It opens with this provocative question: “What have I done in my life?” Kramer answers, regretfully, that he failed to do the one thing that he should have done: pas on “proper values” to his kids. He writes, “I hadn’t done for my children what my father had done for me.”
The story of Kramer invites me to ask, How well am I doing for my children what my parents did for me?
